Oxford Community Land Trust (OCLT) have been working for a number of years to carry out a community led development in the area of Cumnor in Oxford, and acquired their first site in 2008; a backfield area with complex planning issues includes access, parking and some local opposition.

Askew Cavanna Architects were appointed to design a scheme for six affordable flats on the site and, following a community consultation held in collaboration with tangentstudio, were successful in obtaining full Planning Approval.

The design is for an energy efficient, highly sustainable compact arrangement of six flats over two floors; the mix includes studio, 1 bed and 2 bed flats.

Design standards include Passivhaus levels of insulation and airtightness, and the proposal incorporates Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR), along with a large area of solar panels on the south facing roof.

Construction is of timber frame using a prefabricated Structural Insulated Panel System, clad in cedar boarding under a low maintenance metal roof.

Once completed, tenants will be selected from amongst those with local connections, and will manage the flats as a co-operative with OCLT's supervision.

Our projects include the design of buildings for community groups and charities, affordable eco housing and hostels, low energy offices and commercial refurbishments.
