Sports hall for young people in diverse and inclusive Community Centre using acoustic panels and mural artwork

The project began with the Practice leading extensive consultations with local residents and centre users. Despite being in lockdown, young people, youth workers, reps from homeless charities, occupational therapists and dance schools all fed into the design process. The feedback helped to prioritise work to areas of the building that would provide maximum social value, as well highlighting where alterations could best support the Charity’s business case; such as increasing flexibility in the use of existing spaces, a new shower, a new welcoming reception, new offices and co-working spaces, and improving accessibility and acoustics throughout.

Robust flooring and furniture was installed, with interior design reflecting the tones and textures of the surrounding area. Coloured paint was used strategically throughout the building to celebrate and highlight social interactions; such as in the new reception, the kitchen servery and a new seating area at the heart of the Centre.

The consultations also revealed a strong desire to share the Charity’s ethos and history in the redesign, which led to the concept for the whole youth centre; sharing the Charity’s past, present and future with visitors, making the journey through the building more enjoyable, informative and inclusive. This developed into further art workshops in which young building users had direct involvement and authorship of their space.

Following the consultations and redesign, Full Circle @ Docklands have emerged from lockdown with a sense of pride and building users who are familiar with the changes, despite most having not being in the Centre for more than a year.

Our projects include the design of buildings for community groups and charities, affordable eco housing and hostels, low energy offices and commercial refurbishments.
